Spring Storm Causing Delays, Cancellations in Northeast

After causing travel headaches across the Midwest this weekend, Winter Storm Xanto is now wreaking havoc Monday on the Northeast.

According to Weather.com, the unusual spring storm caused flood warnings in New York City and New Jersey, as well as bringing snow and freezing rain to areas in the Great Lakes and Northeast regions.

While the storm is expected to weaken Monday night, meteorologists are calling for heavy rain in parts of the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England, where coastal flooding is also expected to be an issue.

MORE Impacting Travel

Airlines serving the Northeast have issued travel waivers to allow passengers to change their impacted flights without paying the typical fees. Top carries in the United States have waived the fees, including Delta, Southwest, United and more.

In total, more than 400 flights were canceled in and out of the U.S. Monday, according to FlightAware.com at 10 a.m. ET.

Some of the airports being impacted by the storm system include New York’s John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia, New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International, Boston’s Logan International, Philadelphia International, Hartford’s Bradley International and many more throughout the Northeast.

Winter Storm Xanto dumped as much as two feet of snow on the Upper Midwest Sunday, which caused flight delays and cancellations, as well as adverse driving conditions throughout the region. In addition, powerful winds downed trees and power lines farther south, which left at least four people dead.

The biggest travel issues were felt at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, where 13 inches of snow fell Saturday and Sunday. The spring storm brought heavy snow and high winds, causing the cancellation of around 700 flights at the facility this weekend.
