To become a tour bus driver, there are some things you must do: training, receive a commercial driver’s license, and have working mechanical knowledge of your rig.
Many tour bus drivers must take training courses before being certified by the touring company. Some companies require a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or something related to social communications. As the driver, you not only need to know how to operate the vehicle but how to be a tour guide for your passengers. Look into a company you would like to work for to see what training they offer and how long their programs are.
Because your vehicle is so much bigger than most cars on the road, you will be required to get a CDL (commercial driver’s license). This license can be given through any state licensing division that finds you capable and trustworthy. Prior to applying for the license, make sure your criminal record is clean. Serious offenses like a DUI can threaten your license. The state and your company want to keep passengers and everyone else on the road safe. Some tour bus companies also require at least three years of CDL experience, so you know how to handle the vehicle with other people around. Investigate companies you are interested in working for to find out their exact requirements.
Working mechanical knowledge of the bus is essential to becoming a tour bus driver. Because mechanical problems could happen anywhere, you need to know immediate repair information and more technical aspects. Not every mechanic can be reliable for knowing how the bus runs, except for you. Performing regular maintenance before and after a trip will help your bus function more reliably on the road. Avoid having your passengers stranded by having a working mechanical knowledge of your rig.
