Why You Should Leave Social Media Alone When Traveling

Social media is a modern miracle that allows us to stay in contact with friends and family everywhere. However, it has its downsides as well – sometimes even becoming addictive. When traveling especially, you have a great excuse to leave it behind.

Enjoy the Moment

Vacations are short. You really only have so much time to soak up what’s directly in front of your eyes – so why distract yourself? As beautiful as a photo can be, actually seeing and experiencing the view for yourself is going to be far better. In that same line of thinking, being able to truly soak in the experience of where you are and what you’re doing will mean more to you than any Instagram post showing it all off to everyone you know. What use are good photos of your travels if all of your memories are of you trying to get the perfect photo? At the end of the day, it’s best to just turn it off and let yourself open your eyes.

Protect Your Home

This point may not even be something that you previously considered – but it is important to think about nonetheless. Burglars often use social media posts to find home targets. It is simply one online resource of many that may be used to keep tabs on certain attractive homes. Sometimes your personal information (name, age, etc.) can be found in connection to your house with only a simple Google search. That’s only a short hop, skip, and a jump away from finding your social media. If you’re posting about your vacation while you’re gone, it’s a green light for them to loot your residence.

Feel Better About Yourself

Regardless of whether or not you’re traveling or at home, it’s a proven fact that social media is designed to make you feel like everyone else has a better life than you. In turn, you will want to show everyone that your life is also comparably glamorous. Nowhere will this be more possible than while traveling – but don’t do it! You will simply feed into the cycle. Who is your vacation for, anyways? You, or everybody else? At the end of the day, shutting down your social media will likely improve your mental health and your travel experience generally.

Social media is an entertainment tool. It should not be your main focus during travel – or really ever, to be honest. If you want to focus on what is really important, as well as make smart decisions for your household, it’s best to put it away entirely.
