A handful of major airlines are waiving change fees as Winter Storm Diego is expected to bring freezing rain, heavy snow and damaging ice to a large swath of the southern U.S. this weekend and into early next week.
United Airlines and Frontier Airlines are among those carriers that will allow affected travelers to rebook their flights without having to pay a costly change fee.
Travelers will have several days to complete the rebooked travel in most cases.
American’s waiver covers cities such as Oklahoma City and Springfield, Missouri through Saturday and cities including Asheville and Charlotte, North Carolina and Knoxville, Tennessee through Monday.
Other notable cities expected to be impacted include Santa Fe, New Mexico; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Dallas, Texas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Nashville, Tennessee; Raleigh, North Carolina and Roanoke, Virginia, among others.

According to Weather.com, Diego is likely to cause significant travel disruptions from parts of the southern Plains into the Southeast in the coming days as ice accumulations in some areas could be enough to take down trees and knock out power.
Travelers are always encouraged to check their flight status with their airline before arriving at the airport.
