Bartering isn’t a new concept, but it’s slowly gaining popularity in the travel realm and a new initiative proves that.
The world’s first Barter Week will soon occur November 19-25, and it’s providing travelers an opportunity to stay in one of 450 properties in 60 countries around the world for free in exchange for a service.

Properties range from small hotels to rental properties, bed-and-breakfasts, and more. Amenities vary at each property, too. The Ferrieha Farmhouse on the island of Gozo has a swimming pool and wood-heated sauna. While a one-night stay is usually about $130, it can be free for the right traveler who is willing to update the property’s website or create a piece of art to be showcased on-site.
Travelers will discover that some of the properties have specific wishes like shooting a short video of the property to be used by the owners on their website and social media.
Don’t be surprised to find some odd barter requests, too. A property in Portoferraio on the island of Elba is in search of “ancient silver forks” and a Tuscan host is willing to offer a free stay in exchange for a bicycle for a very tall man.
Some properties don’t list a “barter wish” and are allowing travelers to suggest a service in exchange for a free room. Barter offers could be anything like teaching a language, designing a website, painting the walls of the property, or managing the front desk.
The host can accept, reject, or negotiate a barter. Hosts that accept a barter will then discuss with travelers the length of their stay and how long they would like travelers to work on their bartered service each day.
Barter Week’s organizers told The Guardian, “We constantly monitor offers and requests and we’ve sometimes noticed unusual or peculiar offers or requests – innocent ones, however, not illegal or inappropriate ones so far.”
While Barter Week is November 19-25, travelers can rest assured that they will have more opportunities to barter for a free stay as some properties are accepting barter offers year-round.
