Cross-Country Road Tripping: How to Avoid an Accident

Going on a cross-country road trip can be a great bonding experience for you and whoever you travel with. However, while you do want to have fun, you want to make sure that you stay safe and avoid getting in an accident. Here are some things you should do to make sure you and your travel buddies stay safe.

Take Breaks

When going on a cross-country road trip, it’s important to make sure that you pace yourself. If you’re driving with other licensed drivers in the car, make sure to take breaks every few hours to stretch your legs and avoid falling asleep at the wheel.

If there are no other legal drivers in the car that can take over on driving duty, it is extremely important to take more breaks and make sure you feel well enough to keep driving. Sight-seeing along the way is a great way to get in enough breaks and allow for some extra fun on your trip.

Vary Your Entertainment

While listening to the same song on repeat may be fun for the first hour of your trip, it will get old quickly. Make sure that you have a variety of entertainment to keep you alert throughout your trip.

Audiobooks are a great way to pass the time while driving. Talking to other people in the car is also a good way to have something to keep you alert and have quality time with the people you love. However, getting in an accident can be costly, so make sure whatever you choose isn’t too distracting.

Prioritize Sleep

Make sure that you get enough sleep on the road. Taking frequent breaks to be able to sleep and switch drivers is one of the best ways to avoid getting in an accident. If you can, stop at night to stay in a hotel to get a good night’s sleep. This will help you to be well rested for your next day of traveling. It’s also much more comfortable than sleeping in your car. While it’s important for you as the driver to get sleep, it’s equally important that your kids sleep. Tired kids mean miserable kids, and you want to avoid that as much as possible.

Bring Snacks

Another way to help you stay alert while driving and keep your energy up is to bring good snacks to eat on the road. Foods like pretzels, grapes, apple slices, popcorn, and jerky are all good options that will keep your kids occupied and keep them from reaching the hangry stage. You can do all healthy snacks for the road or have a mix of healthy and prepackaged snacks.

Depending on your family’s likes and dislikes, you can do individual treat boxes for each family member as well as things like sandwiches in a cooler. However, you’ll want to try and avoid foods that can melt and ruin the seats of your car as well as foods that will distract the driver. Things that are disposable that you won’t have to worry about washing are also good options.

Fill Up Regularly

During your road trip, make sure to fill up your car regularly and record things like miles to help with any maintenance issues that may come up. Making sure not to let your car get too low on gas will help you to make sure that you aren’t caught in a situation where you’re stuck on the side of the road because your car ran out of fuel. That can put a damper on any situation. As well as filling up on gas regularly, make sure to get your car checked by a mechanic before heading out on the road. You want to make sure there are no problems before driving a long distance.

There are many ways to make a cross-country road trip as stress-free as possible and avoid any accidents. Snacks, music, and sleeping are just a few of these ways. By taking precautions to make sure that you are able to drive safely and have an enjoyable trip, you’ll be able to create lifelong memories and avoid accidents. Happy traveling!
