According to the Peoria Journal Star, Sun County Airlines Flight 8657 took off from General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport in Illinois en route to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when the incident occurred.

The plane carrying World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans was struck by lightning mid-flight, but passengers reportedly said they had no idea the aircraft had been damaged.
Officials from Sun County Airlines said the plane landed safely without incident and maintenance crews discovered damage from the lightning strike. The carrier sent another aircraft to Washington, D.C. to fly the veterans back to Peoria Tuesday night.
