Holland America Prepares to Say Goodbye to Prinsendam

Holland America Line‘s Prinsendam will leave its fleet July 1, 2019. The ship has been sold to the German cruise company Phoenix Reisen.

The 835-guest Prinsendam will be chartered back to Holland America Line to complete its planned voyages from now through July 1, 2019.

After that date, the ship’s scheduled voyages will be taken over by Rotterdam, Volendam, and Veendam. Holland America Line will reach out to confirmed guests and agents to re-accommodate them.

“Prinsendam has proudly served our guests since 2002, and we share in the fondness that many of our loyal cruisers have for this special ship,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line. “As we look to the future and focus on delivering the programming and innovations that our guests are asking for, we remain focused on exceeding guest expectations on every cruise and will continue to offer the unique itineraries that Prinsendam sailed on our other, smaller ships.”

Prinsendam was built for Royal Viking Line as Royal Viking Sun in 1988. Cunard Line operated the ship from 1994 through 1998 and then transferred it to Seabourn Cruise Line. It operated as Seabourn Sun from 1999 until joining the Holland America Line fleet in 2002 as Prinsendam.

Phoenix Reisen is a Germany-based travel agency that began operating cruises in 1988. Its ships include ms Amadea, ms Artania, ms Albatros and ms Deutschland. The company also operates some 50 riverboats.

Holland America Line will debut its second Pinnacle-class ship, Nieuw Statendam, in December 2018. A third Pinnacle-class ship is due for delivery in 2021.
