How Can I Receive Proper Healthcare While Traveling?

Few things can take the fun out of a trip more quickly than having to deal with health issues. Regardless if the issue is a chronic health condition that you must address while traveling or if it is an unexpected injury or illness, you need to know how you can receive proper health care while away from home. Here are three ways that you can ensure that your health needs are taken care of while traveling.

Ask for Larger Prescription Bottles

Shorter trips are obviously easier to plan for than an extended vacation. If you have a chronic health issue that requires medication, you should make sure that you have sufficient amounts of medicine to get you through your trip. Be sure to visit your primary physician prior to your trip and ask for larger prescription bottles if you are going on a trip that will necessitate that you need more medication than the usual amount in a standard prescription. It is also important to make sure that you travel safely with your medications so that they do not lose their potency. All medicines need to be kept in your carry-on bags if you are traveling by air so that they remain in a temperature-controlled environment. You should also keep a list of all of your medicines with you at all times. This will come in handy should you need to show a medical professional what medicines you are taking.

Nurse Advice Line

A nurse’s line can be a huge blessing when you get sick while traveling. In fact, a nurse’s advice number may prevent ER visits. Rather than wasting time and money finding and waiting at the ER, you may be able to simply call a nurse’s line and get the recommendations that you need to treat your ailment. While a nurse cannot prescribe medicine over the phone, they can tell you if you need to seek further treatment from a doctor in person or if you can treat the symptoms yourself using at-home remedies or over-the-counter medications.

Be Informed Before You Go

Before you set off on your travel adventure, it is important that you educate yourself about where to go and what to do should you require medical attention while away from home. This prior knowledge is especially important if you are traveling internationally. Many people are surprised to learn that they may not be covered by their insurance when traveling abroad. At this point, you are up to the mercy of the destination’s health care system. When traveling internationally, it is always a good idea to keep the phone number of the U.S. consulate handy so that you can contact them about questions and concerns about medical coverage.

While it can add a bit of uncertainty to your trip, traveling with a health condition can be managed appropriately if you have a plan. Equipping yourself with the right knowledge and enough medicine to last the duration of your trip will give you peace of mind as you set out on your travel journey.
