How to Get a Good Night Sleep on Your First Night of a Business Trip

Jet lag is killer, especially on business trips where you’re expected to perform well. If you want to be at your best, you need to get quality sleep. That can be tough if you don’t take steps to make sure you can get a good night’s sleep that first night. So how do you set yourself up for success on the first night of your business trip?

Adjust Your Schedule Beforehand

If you want to minimize jet lag, you may find it helpful to start adjusting your schedule a few days before your trip. Try moving it in half-hour increments each day for a smoother transition. How much you are able to adjust your schedule may depend on the difference in time zones. It’s much easier to adjust to a two hour time difference than a 12 hour difference.

Try a Sleep Aid

Sometimes it isn’t feasible to adjust your schedule. If you need some extra help getting to sleep, consider trying sleep aid supplements. Melatonin supplements are commonly taken to help people sleep better. It’s available over the counter at most drug stores. Some people have reported CBD products to be helpful as well. Most CBD products are best used in the evening because of their relaxing effects. Of course, it may not be the best idea to take a new supplement for the first time on a business trip in case you have unexpected reactions. Make sure you consult with your doctor before taking any medications.

Create a Healthy Sleep Environment

When you arrive at your lodgings, there are some things you should do to set yourself up for a good night’s sleep. Make sure your room is dark and quiet. If noise is an issue, you may find white noise helpful. There are lots of white noise recordings you can access online. Adjust the temperature of the room as well. Most adults sleep best when the room is somewhere between 60-72 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, the exact right temperature will vary with the individual, but generally speaking, you’ll sleep better in cooler temperatures.
