How to Prepare for an Island Resort Vacation

Island resorts are known for their sunny beaches, sparkling pools, tropical flavors, and vibrant nightlife. You can indulge in lazy days under the palms with an umbrella drink or try out water sports and land adventures. Whatever your dream, you’ll enjoy your resort vacation more if you prepare everything you need in advance.

Make Sure Your Paperwork is in Order

As soon as you’ve booked your travel plans, find your passport. You may think you know where you put it, but you don’t want the frenzied panic of trying to locate it right before your flight leaves. Check to make sure everything is up to date.

If you’re needing a passport for the first time, you should apply well in advance. It can take two to three months for the paperwork to process. In some locations, particularly in Asia and South America, you may also need a tourist visa.

Work on Your Swimming Skills

Maybe you’ll lie around the pool all day, but if you really want to experience what a tropical island has to offer, you’ll need to seriously immerse yourself in the water. Tropical seas are filled with amazing marine life and natural wonders.

For the best views, you should try snorkeling and scuba diving. Strong swimming skills will help you prepare for scuba diving. As you prepare for your trip, spend a few days each week in the pool, brushing up on your strokes and breath control.

Plan What to Wear

You may be thinking that the only clothes you need will be shorts, t-shirts, and swimwear. You’re right for the most part, but it’s actually more complicated than that. Many island resorts don’t allow shorts or tank tops in their restaurants; bring lightweight trousers or sundresses.

Indoors, air conditioning can be chilly, and evenings by the beach can be cool. Pack a sweater or shawl. It’s also a good idea to bring more than one swimsuit. You’ll be in and out of the water all day, and it’s more pleasant to slip on a suit that’s had time to dry.

You won’t need too much for your island vacation, but a little preparation will help you put your cares behind you and get you in the mood for a great time. Learn about the resort, see what it has to offer, and plan accordingly. Don’t forget the sunscreen.
