IHG Expands Luxury Resort Portfolio With Intercontinental Hayman Island

InterContinental has signed an agreement to take over management of a luxe Whitsunday Islands resort that will be rebranded and refurbished by the hotel giant.

The property, currently named Hayman Island, will remerge in 2019 as Hayman Island, by InterContinental.

A 166-room hotel, Hayman Island is the only property on the island and will be refreshed to showcase world-class facilities, rooms and suites in one of the world’s most unique locations.

The remote Whitesunday Islands are located between the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Most of the islands are uninhabited.

IHG’s new resort will be accessible via Hamilton Island and then by either luxury vessel or helicopter.

In addition to the hotel, Mulpha Australia Limited will offer a bespoke collection of homes for sale to those who want to own a small slice of paradise.

As part of what is being described as a landmark agreement with Mulpha Australia Limited, IHG will also continue a long-term agreement to manage both InterContinental Sydney and InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort.

InterContinental Sydney has long been an iconic feature of the Australian city’s skyline since opening in the 1980s. IHG said a significant investment will be made in refurbishments and renewal over the coming years, designed to elevate the Sydney hotel to even higher levels of luxury and sophistication. It will be the first major upgrade since opening, and will add event spaces, including a grand ballroom that shows off the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House.

InterContinental Sanctuary Cove was the first InterContinental Resort to open in Australia. IHG took over management in 2012. The property includes dramatic stained-glass windows, a grand staircase, beach lagoon and access to championship golf courses.

The property was designed to reflect the grand, graceful architecture of a classic Queensland estate, nestled within the beautiful surrounds of Sanctuary Cove. Under the new agreement, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove will also undergo a refurbishment.

“Luxury travelers have long had an affinity with InterContinental Sydney and InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, so we are thrilled to continue their legacy for many years to come,” said Leanne Harwood, managing director, Australasia and Japan, IHG. “What is particularly special is to now welcome Hayman Island to the IHG family. We could not be more delighted to continue, and strengthen, our partnership with Mulpha Australia as we pursue our expansion plans in Australasia.”
