The RIU Tequila has emerged from a complete transformation. The updates were many months in the works but the resulting upgrades are a big payoff for guests of the Playa del Carmen, Mexico, property.
The resort, which opened 20 years ago, reopened with a snazzy new look. While exteriors maintain the essence of the Mexican Caribbean, common areas, gardens and rooms have all been revamped.
The 630 guestrooms have a fresher, more modern white decor with splashes of red and accented by traditional wood furnishings. In keeping with its new resort-wide style, floors are now a ceramic parquet that extends through the bathroom, which now all offer showers.

One of the more noticeable changes was to the pool areas. Rather than two large pools for guests and one for children, there are now five rectangular pools. One is dedicated to kids, with slides and water features. Another pool, for adults, has a swim-up bar.
RIU also enhanced its gastronomic offerings on the property. There is a new Italian restaurant, Rinascita, and a steakhouse, Black Cow. Rosa Roja, the main buffet, remains as does the Asian-fusion restaurant, Bamboo, and the Beach Club. In the evenings, the Beach Club transforms into a Mexican-themed restaurant. Bars have also been updated and renamed.
There is a new RiuLand club and a playground located next to the children’s pool. Guests can also use the new gym and the Riu Fit zone. Wi-Fi access is also available throughout the property.
