Tourists Trapped on Hawaiian Island

As the heavy rain and devastating flooding started to subside on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai Monday, rescue teams worked to help those stranded, including a large group of around 40 tourists.

According to The Associated Press, the tourists stuck on Kauai were taken to a Red Cross shelter Saturday, which was built inside an elementary school in the town of Hanalei.

Plans to airlift the tourists and locals from the school were abandoned due to the severe weather, and the group inside ran out of food and water before an emergency team could replenish them Sunday.

Emergency teams had evacuated 152 people by helicopter, 121 people by bus and others by water by Monday afternoon. There were no reports of major injuries, but several homes on the Hawaiian island were completely destroyed in the floods.

MORE Impacting Travel

Another 30 campers staying in the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park were also stranded Monday, and park officials were working with state emergency agencies to coordinate a rescue mission.

In total, the National Weather Service recorded 28.1 inches of rainfall in Hanalei between Saturday and Sunday, but officials believe it was even more, as the rainfall gauge stopped recording during the storm.
