Airport Strikes in Spain May Cause Delays Easter Weekend

Travelers heading to Spain around Easter may want to plan for delays as a strike may affect airports throughout the country.

About 60,000 ground handling airport staff in Spain may undergo an “indefinite strike” which would begin on the Saturday of Easter weekend. About 5 million travelers are expected to travel to Spain during Easter, a peak time for the country with celebrations like Semana Santa.

If the strike occurs, there will be delays, flight cancellations and long wait times in the airports.

The strike is a result of discontent between unions, Union Sindical Obrera and Union General Trabajadores, and their employer, Aseata. The discontent focuses on pay and conditions negotiations, as well as agreements with Aseata that affect employees who transfer from one company to another.

If an agreement can’t be reached between the unions and Aseata, the indefinite strike will begin on April 20 and will affect every Spanish airport and all travelers visiting the country for Easter celebrations and spring vacations.
