Mexican President Proposes Fourth Airport in Hidalgo

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) revealed plans this week to build a fourth airport in Tizayuca, Hidalgo, after canceling the construction of the New International Airport of Mexico City (NAIM) in Texcoco.

According to Ladevi, President AMLO presented the new proposal to build a fourth airport in Tizayuca during a breakfast to commemorate the Day of the Mexican Air Force, saying the idea would help combat air traffic near International Airport of Mexico City (AICM).

The new project would be located on a 900-hectare property in the Hidalgo municipality that AMLO believes would “solve the problem of saturation of the current airport.”

In addition to the construction of a new airport in Tizayuca, the proposal would allot three million dollars to AICM for the airlines/mexico-president-promises-more-runways-after-airport-cancelation.html” target=”_self” rel=”nofollow”>development of a new terminal and another runway at the Toluca Terminal, both expected to be completed by 2022.

“We are also talking with the governor of the State of Mexico, Alfredo del Mazo, to incentivize the Toluca airport, which is seldom used,” AMLO told Ladevi. “The airport currently moves about 600,000 passengers and has the capacity to transport eight million passengers. It is also part of the airport system of Mexico City.”

As for the Santa Lucia airport, AMLO said the Ministry of National Defense would have administrative control of the new air terminal, as well as the resources generated by the rent of its facilities.

The plan calls for the canceled NAIM property to be transformed into an ecological park.
