Spirit Airlines to Launch International Flight from Atlantic City, N.J.

The Miramar, Florida-based carrier Spirit Airlines announced an increase in flights from its Atlantic City, New Jersey base adding two new routes, including the airlines first international departure from the airport.
Spirit will launch service to Cancun, Mexico (CUN), with four weekly flights on Oct. 29, followed on Oct. 31 by three weekly flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU).
Additionally, Spirit previously announced new daily service to Miami International Airport (MIA) beginning on Oct. 6.
Spirit is the only major U.S. airline operating flights from Atlantic City. Their expansion now brings a total of ten destinations from the oceanside city and the first international departure.
Matt Klein, Spirit Executive V.P. & Chief Commercial Officer said their operation is 35% larger than it was in 2019 and that’s thanks to increasing demand for air travel.
“Demand is picking back up, flights are full again just like they were previously, we’re adding a lot more nonstop flights and that’s what customers are telling us they want right now, fly nonstop.”
In 2012 the airport terminal underwent renovations to install Customs & Border protection facilities to begin to allow international departures and arrivals. However, since the construction, the airport hasn’t been able to secure any international service. Air Canada provides flights to the airport from Toronto, however, those flights are treated as domestic arrivals since Toronto-Pearson International Airport has a U.S. immigration checkpoint and travelers pre-clear before departure.
