World’s Most Beautiful Airport Opening in October

The world’s most beautiful airport is scheduled to welcome its first flights October 4.

According to BBC.com, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s 100th airport Monday in the northern-eastern state of Sikkim. The Pakyong Airport will initially host two daily flights operated by SpiceJet.

The airport is described as an engineering marvel, as it was carved out of a hill near Pakyong village at 4,500 feet above sea level. The facility is located on 201 acres of property and features a terminal building that holds about 100 passengers.

The steep topography, high seismicity, and hostile weather conditions resulted in the “extremely challenging” project taking nine years to complete. At each end of the airport’s runway, there are deep valleys that make the facility unique.

Officials in India are hoping the new airport boosts tourism to Sikkim, which is home to a number of peaks, glaciers and high-altitude lakes.
