How to Improve Upon Your Summer Vacation Home

Whether it’s a cabin in the woods or a condo by the beach, all vacation homes have something in common: they should be a place to relax, unwind, and enjoy. Your summer home can be as primitive or luxurious as you wish, but there are a few improvements that will make all homes just a tad better.

Add More Space to Relax Outside

Summer vacation can mean lounging in the shade during the day and roasting marshmallows at night. You can make several improvements to make your outdoor space more comfortable and more fun. If you have just a small space, consider sprucing it up with an outdoor rug and cushioned patio furniture.

With a larger space, you may be able to create a patio or deck. A freestanding canopy can provide shade, and many have roll-down screened sides to keep out the bugs. A fire pit makes for a popular gathering space on those cool summer evenings.

Use Solar Panels

Using solar energy can save you a bundle, especially since you’re not at your vacation home full-time. No matter where your home is located, solar panels can catch the energy from the long hours of sunlight in the summer. Today’s solar energy systems are much more efficient than they were in the past.

The cost of your solar panels will depend on how big the roof on your home is. Solar panels are generally about 65 inches by 39 inches. The cost of the panels and installation also varies from state to state.

Upgrade Your Kitchen

Even though you’re on vacation, you still need to eat, and an upgraded kitchen will let you cook anything you might desire. If you have room, consider adding a kitchen island. This can give you extra storage space and more counter space for preparing meals. For smaller spaces, there are portable islands on wheels.

In replacing cabinets, you can use the same footprint as your original kitchen and still add more space by thinking vertically. Newer kitchen cabinets are taller than in the past and have more shelves. Replacing appliances can make your kitchen more energy-efficient.

As time goes on, you’ll probably be making small improvements to your vacation home as your needs evolve. These changes will add value to your home and make your home a place where you can sweet summer create memories.
