What Everyone Who Wears Glasses Should Do Before an Extended Trip

If you’re considering going on a long trip, and also happen to wear glasses, there are special considerations you should have in mind. A week or two isn’t an issue, but if you are traveling for a year or more, you have some reasons to think ahead. Whether this is a long jaunt around the world, or moving across country (or across nations) for a semester or two of schooling, here are some things to prepare to protect your eye health.

Update Your Prescription

First of all, Atlantic Eye Institute says you should go get your eyes checked and update your prescription. This gives you the ability to order glasses and have them shipped to you wherever you might be. Unless you’re going to be gone for longer than two or three years, your prescriptions shouldn’t change so dramatically during your journey that you need to find a new eye doctor while overseas, and instead can focus on the more fun parts of your trip!

Protecting Your Glasses

If you’re buying new frames for your new prescription, consider going with strong frames which can withstand travel problems. You don’t want to be using duct tape halfway through your journey! Think ahead as well, and have whatever specialty films to help prevent scratches applied as well. Visionworks says it’s important to clean your glasses once a day and prevent harmful quick fixes. Clean glasses do help little scratches from becoming big scratches, as well. Consider whether you need sunglasses in your prescription to go along on your adventure.

Prepare Ahead for Issues

If you’re a seasoned traveler, you know that sometimes the worst can happen, even when you’re being careful. Having a small repair pack with you with an eyeglasses repair kit can help you on your way. BLUblox says this can include such things as a standard small repair kit (with tiny screwdriver and screws), but also a small container of superglue, thread, a sewing pin, a paperclip, and other small household supplies can get you fixed up as quickly as possible! Another good idea is to buy a second back-up pair of glasses if your first pair gets too damaged to repair.

Your trip will be a lot easier to enjoy if things like your eyesight aren’t a worry. Grab that new prescription, and protect your new frames. In case of emergency, be ready with your kit, and keep enjoying your adventure!
