United Passenger Opens Emergency Exit, Uses Inflatable Slide to Deplane

On Sunday evening, a flight was unable to take off from Newark Liberty International Airport due to a passenger’s creative exit.

According to United Airlines spokeswoman Maggie Schmerin, “While Flight 1640 was parked at the gate at Newark Liberty International Airport, a passenger opened the emergency exit door and departed the aircraft using the slide.”

That passenger was Troy Fattun, 25, who told the officers who met him on the ground that he had to leave the plane in a hurry because he was on the wrong flight.

But Port Authority says that, while the passenger did indeed appear to be frantic, he was on the right plane — at least according to his ticket.

Fattun was eventually arrested. His fellow passengers were forced to deplane and wait five hours to catch another flight to Tampa that left around midnight.
