What You Need to Do Before Embarking on a Cross-Country Motorcycle Trip

It sounds thrilling to travel across the country on a motorcycle. However, you can’t just get out on the road and ride. There’s a lot of planning that needs to happen for you to have a great trip.

Plan Your Route

One of the most essential parts of preparing for your trip is planning the actual route you’ll be taking. First of all, you’ll need to pick a destination that will help you determine your route. When driving in a car, most people will select the fastest route. However, when traveling via motorcycle you’ll want to pick a route that is more conducive to that type of travel. For example, it might make more sense to travel on connecting highways. This will give you a more versatile route as well as great scenery. You should also map out gas stations along the way so you don’t get stranded.

Know the Laws

Once you plan your route, you need to do some research on the laws in each of the states you’ll be passing through. Not all states will have the same rules and if you aren’t aware of the differences you could end up in trouble. For example, in Utah and many other states, you may need to show proof of insurance if stopped. You must prepare by bringing any necessary documentation with you. You should also know about different behavior that is allowed. This behavior could include wearing a helmet or lane splitting. Make sure you know all the laws before you travel.

Know What to Pack

You’ll have limited room on your bike, so you need to pack smart. Try to start with absolute necessities. You can’t bring all the comforts of home with you, but you still need to be prepared. Take anything you’ll need at your destination and along the way. For example, you might want to look at the weather conditions of all the places you’ll be driving through. In general, it’s best to pack in a waterproof bag. When you pack your bike, put the heavy items on the bottom and use multiple bag sizes. If you’re traveling with others you can spread the load. For example, one person carries the first aid kit, and one person carries the tent.

A cross-country motorcycle road trip is bound to be an exciting experience. If you properly prepare, you can make that experience even better. Take the time now to get ready for your so you can set yourself up for a good trip.
