Why Was a Southwest Flight Attendant in Overhead Bin?

Southwest Airlines is at it again — the company’s flight attendants, known for their silly and entertaining antics, pulled another stunt on a recent flight: a Nashville flight attendant climbed into the overhead bin to talk to passengers from the top of the cabin, catching a lot of travelers by surprise.

Travelers leaving Nashville International Airport on Monday got quite a surprise if they were flying on one Southwest Airlines flight. The overhead bin had some precious cargo: one of the flight attendants. The flight attendant climbed up into the bin and spoke to passengers from the top of the cabin. Later, she climbed down and resumed work normally.

A passenger who was caught by surprise with the stunt recorded the flight attendant and posted the video on social media. It’s not the first time a Southwest flight attendant has taken up residence in the overhead bin, though. In February, a newly winged flight attendant climbed into one to pose for a photo on her first day.

Of course, none of this is out of the ordinary for Southwest passengers, who are regularly surprised and amused at the flight attendants’ attempts at getting travelers to listen—attempts which can include singing, dancing, or making jokes.

“As long as all of the safety and regulatory requirements are met, our flight attendants are encouraged to make onboard safety briefings engaging through the use of humor, song, or other individual twists,” Elise May, Inflight Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) at Southwest Airlines, told Skift in 2014. “One example of this is flight attendant Marty Cobb, who recently made a splash when her comedic pre-flight briefing went viral. Marty is just one example of the fun-loving spirit that Southwest employees exhibit every day to further enhance our safety culture.”
