Quintana Roo Dubbed Undisputed Leader in Mexican Cruise Tourism

New data revealed Quintana Roo was the undisputed leader in Mexican cruise tourism in 2018.

According to the Riviera Maya Times, the General Directorate of Ports and Merchant Marine of the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation revealed more than 4.9 million cruise passengers arrived in Quintana Roo from January to November 2018.

The total number of passengers who arrived in Mexico by boat was 6,975,172, with 70.3 percent attributed to cruise arrivals in Quintana Roo. The report also revealed the port of Cozumel boasts the most substantial cruise activity in all of Mexico, where 3,837,420 passengers arrived onboard 1,154 ships.

“Together we move forward so that the benefits of tourism reach more people and contribute to reducing inequality, both in the north and south of the state,” Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquin told the Riviera Maya Times.

In 2018, Mexico exceeded cruise tourism expectations with growth of 7.2 percent in the number of passengers per ship and four percent in arrivals of cruises to national ports. The economic impact of the travelers was $480 million.

As for the cruise port in Mahahual, 1,072,598 tourists arrived aboard 331 cruise ships.
